Valve Confirms Steam Machine Launch in 2026 Despite RAM Shortages
Valve has reaffirmed its commitment to launching the Steam Machine in 2026, despite ongoing challenges related to RAM and storage shortages that have impacted pricing, and scheduling. The company initially signaled potential delays in late 2025 due to the rising costs and limited availability of critical components, driven by high demand from the artificial intelligence industry.
RAM Crisis and Pricing Concerns
The global demand for RAM has surged due to the rapid expansion of AI data centers, leading to increased prices and supply constraints. This situation prompted Valve to revisit its initial pricing and launch plans for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame. As reported by TechRadar, Valve stated it needed to “revisit our exact shipping schedule and pricing.”
Steam Machine Specifications and Performance
The Steam Machine is positioned as a mid-range PC designed for gaming, aiming to offer a more affordable alternative to traditional desktop PCs. Valve is targeting a price point comparable to a PC with similar specifications. The console boasts impressive specifications, including:
- CPU: Semi-custom AMD Zen 4 6-core/12-thread, up to 4.8 GHz
- GPU: Semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 with 28 compute units and 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM (approximately equivalent to a Radeon RX 7600)
- RAM: 16 GB DDR5
- Storage: 512 GB or 2 TB + microSD card slot
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Gigabit Ethernet
- Output: HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4
- Additional Features: 17 front RGB LEDs, swappable front plate
Valve claims the Steam Machine delivers up to six times the performance of the Steam Deck, capable of running games at 4K resolution with 60 frames per second using AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3) upscaling technology. Internal testing showed Cyberpunk 2077 averaging around 65 fps at 4K with FSR and medium settings with ray tracing enabled.
Release Timeline and Product Lineup
Valve initially revealed the Steam Machine in late 2025, with a planned launch in the first half of 2026. Alongside the Steam Machine, Valve is also releasing the Steam Frame and Steam Controller 2. According to GameRant, Valve has reassured consumers that all three products remain on track for a 2026 release. The Steam Machine is slated to launch in all regions where the Steam Deck is currently available.
“We recently said that there are challenges related to memory and storage shortages, but we will ship these three products this year. Further information will be shared as we finalize our plans,” Valve stated in a recent blog post.
Steam Machine: A Second Attempt at the Living Room
The Steam Machine represents Valve’s second attempt to establish a presence in the living room console market, following the unsuccessful launch of the original Steam Machine in 2013. The new Steam Machine, weighing 2.6 kg, is designed to bring the Steam gaming experience to televisions, offering a compact and powerful gaming solution.
