Stephen Colbert to Pen New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Film
Stephen Colbert, known for his decades-long career in comedy and hosting “The Late Show,” is embarking on a new creative journey: writing a film in the “Lord of the Rings” franchise. The announcement, made on March 25, 2026, comes as Colbert prepares to conclude his run as host of the late-night program in May.
A Collaboration with Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens
The project is a collaboration with director Peter Jackson, who helmed the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and screenwriter Philippa Boyens, a key contributor to both the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” film series. The news was shared via a video released on social media, featuring a conversation between Colbert and Jackson. USA Today reported on the announcement.
Inspired by Unadapted Chapters
Colbert’s inspiration for the film stems from six early chapters of “The Fellowship of the Ring” that were not adapted into Jackson’s original trilogy. He envisioned a story that would remain faithful to both Tolkien’s books and Jackson’s cinematic adaptations. The Guardian detailed Colbert’s initial idea.
‘The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past’
The film, currently titled “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past,” will be set 14 years after the passing of Frodo Baggins. The story will follow Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace the steps of their initial adventure. The narrative will explore a secret discovered by Sam’s daughter, Elanor, which sheds light on a critical moment in the War of the Ring. IGN provided a synopsis of the plot.
A Long-Held Passion Project
Colbert, a lifelong fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, pitched the idea to Jackson approximately two years ago. The timing for the project became feasible after the cancellation of “The Late Show” allowed Colbert the necessary time to dedicate to writing the screenplay. He previously made a cameo appearance in Jackson’s 2013 film, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” The Hollywood Reporter noted Colbert’s long-standing fandom.
Production Details
The film will be produced by Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films in association with Colbert’s production company, Spartina. Colbert will co-write the script alongside Boyens and his son, Peter McGee.
