Outbreak of Sexually Transmitted Fungal Infection Raises Concerns
Health officials are warning about an emerging outbreak of a sexually transmitted fungal infection, Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII (TMVII), causing a unique form of ringworm. The outbreak, initially identified in New York in 2024, has now spread to multiple U.S. Cities, with Minnesota experiencing what officials are calling the nation’s “largest known outbreak.”
What is TMVII?
TMVII is a fungal skin infection that causes tinea, commonly known as ringworm. Unlike typical ringworm presentations, TMVII is associated with sexual contact, primarily among men who have sex with men.1 The infection manifests as round, coin-like rashes that are red and irritated, sometimes accompanied by bumps or pimples. These rashes can appear on the arms, buttocks, trunk, genitals, and legs.2
Current Outbreak Status
The first case in Minnesota was confirmed in July 2025, in a Twin Cities resident seeking treatment for a genital rash.2 As of February 16, 2026, Minnesota has identified more than 30 confirmed or suspected cases within the Twin Cities metropolitan area.3 Cases have also been identified in other larger U.S. Cities, though the full extent of the outbreak is unclear due to limited surveillance data.2
Transmission and Prevention
TMVII spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact, including sexual contact.1 Fungal spores can also spread via contaminated surfaces, such as shared razors, sex toys, or linens.1
Health officials recommend the following preventative measures:
- Avoid skin-to-skin contact – sexual or otherwise – if you suspect you may be infected.
- Inform sexual partners if diagnosed with TMVII.
- Do not share clothing or personal items.
Symptoms and Treatment
Symptoms of TMVII can include itchy, painful, and scaly rashes.1 The rashes may be mistaken for other skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.1
Treatment typically involves oral antifungal medication, which may be required for up to three months.3 Delayed treatment can lead to prolonged symptoms, scarring, or secondary infections.3
Ongoing Surveillance
The Minnesota Department of Health has established an enhanced surveillance system to identify and track TMVII cases.2 Due to the fact that TMVII is not a nationally reportable infection, comprehensive data collection remains a challenge.
