Dublin Dad Appeals for Return of Stolen Car Essential for Son’s Care

A Dublin father, Gary Nolan, has made a heartfelt plea for the return of his stolen Skoda Octavia, emphasizing its critical role in providing care and a sense of normalcy for his 23-year-old son, David, who has multiple complex needs.

The black Skoda Octavia, registration plate 171-D-16702, was stolen from outside the family’s home in Santry, Dublin, on March 14th as reported by The Sun. CCTV footage captured at least three individuals arriving in another vehicle before breaking into the home and stealing the car.

Impact on David’s Routine and Well-being

David Nolan has moderate to severe autism, ADHD, anxiety, and an intellectual disability. The stolen car was essential for transporting him to day center appointments, respite care, and simply for drives that provide him with comfort and enjoyment. According to the Irish Times, these drives, and the unique playlist David had created for them, were a significant part of his routine.

“He goes to a day centre, hospital appointments, respite . . . We just need to bring him for drives given that that’s his thing,” Gary Nolan explained. “He even had a playlist in the car which was unique to his taste, that suits him, so even that’s gone . . . It has impacted us quite badly.”

Details of the Theft and Police Investigation

The thieves gained entry to the Nolan’s home, taking both the car keys and Linda Nolan’s handbag. The handbag was later recovered in Lucan Garda station, but the car remains missing. The Sun reports that Gary Nolan has been informed he must wait 28 days for the car to be officially deemed stolen for insurance purposes.

Financial and Emotional Strain

The theft has placed a significant financial burden on the family. Gary, a former Dublin Bus driver, is a full-time carer for David, and his wife Linda works part-time. The family has had to cover the cost of changing their locks after the burglary and are concerned about potential increases in their insurance premiums. As detailed in The Sun, the family has had to postpone their 30th wedding anniversary celebration due to the financial strain.

Community Support and Appeal to Thieves

Gary Nolan has received an outpouring of support from the community, including offers of assistance with transportation and fundraising. He has likewise been sharing appeals on TikTok through his page @sumblinechaos0. Care Champions Ireland and Facebook have also shared the appeal.

Nolan has pleaded with the thieves to simply abandon the car in a safe location so that his family can resume their routine. “If they left the car somewhere tomorrow and it was found, you’d just get back on with your lives,” he said. “I’ve no anger left in me, I just want to let bygones be bygones and just let’s get on with it again.”

Anyone with information about the stolen vehicle is encouraged to contact the Gardaí.
