Strava Expands Activity Tracking with Five New Sport Types
Strava, the popular fitness tracking app boasting over 180 million users, has announced the addition of five new activity types: Padel, Basketball, Volleyball, Cricket, and Dance. This update, released on February 19, 2026, aims to provide more accurate logging options for athletes and enthusiasts beyond traditional endurance sports.
Addressing User Demand for Specific Activity Tracking
Previously, users participating in these sports were required to categorize their activities under the generic “Workout” label. This often resulted in less precise data and a lack of specific metrics tailored to each sport. The introduction of dedicated categories allows for more detailed tracking and analysis, providing users with richer insights into their performance.
Padel’s Rising Popularity and the Need for Accurate Tracking
Strava highlighted Padel as a particularly noteworthy addition, citing its rapid global growth with an estimated 30 million amateur players. The ability to specifically track Padel sessions will enable users to monitor duration, calories burned, and potentially analyze performance metrics in the future.
Expanding Beyond Endurance Sports
While Strava initially gained prominence as a platform for runners and cyclists, the company is strategically expanding its support for a wider range of activities. This move reflects a broader effort to position Strava as a comprehensive activity hub for all athletes, regardless of their chosen sport. The addition of these five sports brings the total number of supported activity types on Strava to over 50.
New Features and Continued Development
Alongside the new sport categories, Strava has similarly introduced “Instant Workouts,” a premium feature offering personalized training recommendations based on user activity history. Apple Watch users benefit from improved route navigation, allowing them to view and follow route maps directly from their wrist. Strava plans to continue adding more activity types throughout 2026, demonstrating a commitment to ongoing development and responsiveness to user needs.
Sport Type Specifics
By default, the new sport types – Basketball, Volleyball, Padel, and Cricket – will include map tracking, with the exception of Dance.
