Stress Isn’t an Illness: Understanding Life’s Challenges

Hundreds of GPs across England have told the BBC they think mental health problems are being over-diagnosed.

One commonly-held view by family doctors, our research suggests, is that society tends too over-medicalise normal life stresses. But they’re also concerned about how hard it is to get help for patients with mental health conditions.

Earlier this week, the Health Secretary ordered GPs Report Increased Mental Health Workload and Under-Diagnosis

the research, based on responses from experienced GPs, highlights a growing trend where primary care physicians are increasingly burdened with mental health issues that traditionally woudl have been handled by dedicated mental health professionals. This shift is attributed to several key factors, including long waiting lists for specialist appointments and a lack of resources within the mental health sector.

“People need to be accepted, helped and encouraged to live life,” one GP stated, while another expressed frustration with the reluctance of services “to fully assess and diagnose” patients. These comments underscore a perceived gap in the system, where individuals may not receive the timely and accurate diagnoses they require.

With nearly 40,000 fully-qualified GPs practicing in England, it’s crucial to note that the study’s findings may not be fully representative of all family doctors. However, the consistent theme of increased mental health workload among participating GPs is a significant concern.

When asked about changes in the time spent on mental health, almost all GPs reported an increase. The primary reasons cited were:

  • Supporting patients who struggle to access quality mental health care elsewhere.
  • Addressing practical issues – such as housing, employment, and finances – that substantially impact patients’ mental health.
  • Distinguishing between genuine mental health concerns and normal life challenges that patients may perceive as mental health issues.

This situation places additional strain on already-overburdened GPs and raises questions about the overall capacity of the healthcare system to adequately address the growing mental health needs of the population.
