John Collison Nominated to Microsoft Board of Directors

Stripe co-founder and President John Collison has been nominated to join Microsoft’s board of directors, according to an annual proxy statement filed Wednesday, GeekWire reported. Collison, 36, is slated to fill one of two upcoming vacancies during Microsoft’s annual meeting on Dec. 8.

Board Departures and New Faces at Microsoft

The addition of Collison brings Microsoft’s board back to 12 members. LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman announced in June that he would step down, and Disney CFO Hugh Johnston is not seeking re-election. Both have served on the board since 2017, with Johnston chairing the audit committee. Meanwhile, former EY CEO Carmine Di Sibio, who was appointed to the board in May, will stand for election by shareholders for the first time.

Microsoft stated in the proxy filing that Collison brings extensive entrepreneurial and operational experience, along with deep expertise in technology. Collison co-founded Stripe alongside his brother, Patrick, in 2010. Businesses utilizing the Bay Area-based payments platform processed $1.9 trillion in payments in 2025. Collison does not currently sit on any other public company board.

Existing Technological Ties Between Microsoft and Stripe

The relationship between Microsoft and Stripe spans multiple years. In January, Microsoft launched Copilot Checkout, a feature powered by Stripe that allows U.S. users of the company’s AI assistant to purchase goods from Etsy sellers and other retailers without leaving the chat interface. In 2023, the two companies collaborated to allow businesses to accept card payments for paid events directly within Microsoft Teams.

CEO Satya Nadella previously discussed the companies’ shared history during an appearance on Stripe’s “Cheeky Pint” podcast in November. Nadella recounted visiting Stripe’s San Francisco office while running Microsoft’s cloud business prior to becoming CEO. He noted that Stripe’s focus on developers influenced Microsoft’s strategy, which ultimately led to the 2018 acquisition of code-sharing platform GitHub for $7.5 billion.
