Billboard charting artist Shyra Sanchez opens up about the physical and emotional hurdles of her breast cancer journey, detailing her courageous triumph over the illness in an exclusive conversation with Page Six. Page Six noted that the vocalist, dancer, and producer received a grade 3 breast cancer diagnosis in 2020 amid the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sanchez receives breast cancer diagnosis during pandemic
Sanchez first visited a plastic surgeon after thinking her breast implant had shifted, only to receive a grade 3 breast cancer diagnosis. “I got the news, and it was just like, it was stunning,” Sanchez told Page Six. “It can’t be breast cancer because I’m healthy… I don’t feel sick or have any symptoms, you know? And I think every woman, they kind of think, ‘No, it can’t be me.'”
Because the diagnosis occurred during the pandemic, Sanchez underwent surgery without family or friends present. “You’re by yourself,” she said, recalling the fear that she might not survive the procedure. Following the initial surgery, doctors discovered remaining active cells, prompting a regimen of radiation treatment. Sanchez completed six months of radiation, five days a week, noting that severe skin peeling and burning began around the fourth week.
Surgical Interventions and Treatment
As part of her extensive medical care, Sanchez underwent a mastectomy and a lumpectomy on her right breast, alongside a partial hysterectomy that left her unable to have children. She was also prescribed tamoxifen, an oral hormone therapy drug used to treat and prevent hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. She stopped taking the long-term medication last year.

Sanchez recalled her mindset during the ordeal, explaining that she decided to focus on fighting rather than yielding to fear. “Something clicked in my mind, and I said, you know what? I can’t have this happen. I’m too young to die. I have to have the fight, not fear. And something just clicked.”
Sanchez is cancer-free and explores breast reconstruction
Sanchez was declared cancer-free in 2023 and currently maintains her health with routine mammograms and medical checkups every six months. She recently met with celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Nicholas Nikolov to explore breast reconstruction options. “Every woman who has undergone a mastectomy deserves the opportunity to explore breast reconstruction,” Dr. Nikolov stated, emphasizing that the procedure aims to achieve a balanced result while supporting emotional well-being and body confidence.
Recently, Sanchez performed her hit songs “Dance with Me” and “Operator” at The Unstoppable Show presented by Supermodels Unlimited Magazine during Los Angeles Fashion Week. She also attended Dance Your Way to Health, a breast cancer awareness event in Los Angeles created by Lousine Ahjemian, RadNet’s Director of Mammography Training in the West.
