The United Nations has issued a dire warning that an imminent military offensive in El Obeid, the capital of Sudan’s North Kordofan state, risks committing serious international crimes and exacerbating a humanitarian crisis already affecting millions, according to Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Turk stated that the buildup of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militias and allied troops around El Obeid, coupled with intensified drone strikes and artillery shelling, signals a “stark warning to the world about an impending human rights disaster,” as reported by the UN Human Rights Council. The city, which has endured siege-like conditions for over 18 months, faces a renewed threat of atrocities reminiscent of past conflicts in North Darfur, including the 2023 massacres in El Fasher and the Zamzam displacement camp.
