A Fortuitous Discovery in San Francisco
The exceptional find was made by three brothers while clearing out the San Francisco home of their recently deceased mother. Hidden beneath layers of brittle newspapers, dust, and cobwebs within a cardboard box, the comic was part of a collection their mother and her sibling had amassed in the years leading up to World War II. She had previously mentioned possessing a valuable comic book collection, but its existence remained a mystery untill the house was prepared for sale.
Lon Allen, Vice President of Comics at Heritage Auctions, described the moment the brothers contacted the auction house. “It was just in an attic, sitting in a box – could have easily been thrown away, could’ve easily been destroyed in a thousand different ways,” he stated. Mr. Allen travelled to San Francisco to authenticate the comic and consult with other experts, confirming its exceptional condition and rarity.

A copy of Batman #1 also sold at the same auction for $60,000, exceeding its starting price by a factor of five.
