From Syria to Amersfoort: Zaher Shalhoub’s Journey of Resilience and Culinary Success
Zaher Shalhoub, a Syrian chef and entrepreneur, has transformed personal tragedy into a testament to the human spirit. His story, chronicled in the new book “Onder één hemel” (Under One Sky) by Bianca van der Linden-Snel, details his journey as a refugee to finding a new home and realizing his dreams in Amersfoort, Netherlands. Shalhoub’s resilience is further exemplified by the opening of his restaurant, My Way, in Vathorst.
A Life Interrupted by War
The war in Syria forced Zaher Shalhoub to flee his homeland, leaving behind his family – his wife and three young children – in a desperate search for safety. His journey to the Netherlands was fraught with hardship, but ultimately led him to Amersfoort, where he began to rebuild his life.
“Onder één hemel”: A Story of Hope and New Beginnings
Bianca van der Linden-Snel’s book, “Onder één hemel,” captures Shalhoub’s powerful life story. The book was presented on March 10, 2026, at De Noot in Hoogland, with 150 attendees. Wethouder Micheline Paffen-Zeenni symbolically welcomed Shalhoub to Amersfoort by pinning the city’s coat of arms to his jacket and receiving the first signed copy of the book.
Van der Linden-Snel was deeply moved by Shalhoub’s story after an initial interview, recognizing the importance of sharing his experiences of perseverance and strength. The book aims to inspire readers and raise awareness about the challenges faced by refugees.
My Way: A Culinary Reflection of Resilience
Zaher Shalhoub’s culinary talents have flourished in Amersfoort. He owns the catering company Hart van Syrië and recently opened the restaurant My Way in Vathorst. The restaurant offers authentic Mediterranean cuisine, featuring traditional Syrian recipes passed down through generations. Each dish tells a story of family, warmth, honesty, and love.
A Four-Year Collaboration
Author Bianca van der Linden-Snel dedicated four years to writing Zaher Shalhoub’s biography alongside her regular work. She believes his story is particularly relevant in today’s world, marked by conflict and polarization.
