Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi receives Treatment for Arm Injury During Election Campaign
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was forced to cancel a scheduled appearance on a nationally televised political debate program on Sunday due to an arm injury sustained while campaigning. The incident occurred during a campaign event were the Prime minister was greeting supporters, according to a statement released via her social media channels.
The cancellation impacts a key program broadcast by NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, intended to feature leaders of various political parties ahead of the upcoming House of Representatives election on February 8th. Official campaigning for the election commenced on Tuesday, and the debate was anticipated to be a critically important platform for party leaders to present their platforms.
Prime minister Takaichi explained that she injured her arm after it was unexpectedly pulled during a handshake with an enthusiastic supporter. She further disclosed that she has a pre-existing condition of rheumatoid arthritis, which was exacerbated by the injury, leading to swelling in her hand. Despite the discomfort, she confirmed that her schedule of planned campaign speeches in Aichi and Gifu prefectures would proceed as planned, following immediate medical attention.
A government source confirmed that a medical officer visited the Prime Minister’s official residence early Sunday morning to provide treatment. Norihisa Tamura, a senior executive within the Liberal Democratic party (LDP), substituted for Prime Minister Takaichi on the NHK program, offering an apology for her absence. Tamura attributed the injury to the physical demands of the campaign trail, including frequent handshakes and continuous movement.
The incident highlights the rigorous schedule and physical toll experienced by political leaders during election periods. While the injury caused a temporary disruption to the televised debate schedule,it has not prevented the prime Minister from continuing her campaign commitments.
