ITA Tournament Spark Sets Up Taylor Trojans Tennis Spring Campaign
Junior Maddy Fuqua secured the singles consolation title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association fall tournament, providing the Taylor Trojans women’s tennis program with a competitive spark as the team builds toward its spring schedule, theechonews.com reported. The annual fall event brings together top National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tennis players competing for a spot in the National ITA Cup held in mid-October.
Fuqua Fights Through Consolation Bracket After Early Setbacks
Fuqua entered the tournament with more experience than her previous appearance, dropping her opening match to Spring Arbor’s Dayra Novella by a 2-1 margin while pushing her opponent to tiebreakers in both dropped sets. She recovered by winning four straight matches to claim the consolation bracket crown. Reflecting on her mental approach, Fuqua noted that confidence in her play shifted significantly from her sophomore season.
Head coach Grubbs and assistant coach Olivia Reed guide the young roster, utilizing the fall tournament to establish competitive standards for the program’s five freshmen. Grubbs noted that returning players helped orient newcomers to the tournament environment. Teammates frequently transition between matches to support one another from adjacent courts, creating a unified team culture that players say elevates their performance levels on the court.
University of Indianapolis Match Opens Spring Season
With the program in its second year of development, Grubbs evaluates each conference match as a baseline measurement for future growth against elite competition. The Trojans open their spring season on Feb. 22 against the University of Indianapolis, carrying forward the competitive lessons and mental resilience forged during the fall ITA tournament run.
