Jim Bakker Served Prison Time for Fraud
The ministry collapsed in March 1987 after Jim Bakker resigned following revelations of a 1980 sexual encounter with church secretary Jessica Hahn, CTV News reported. Bakker paid Hahn $115,000 in ministry funds to secure her silence, according to CTV News. In 1988, federal authorities indicted Bakker on mail fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy charges. Following his release, Bakker married his second wife, Lori, in 1998, and returned to television in 2003 with a new iteration of his program, cbc.ca reported. In June 2021, Bakker and Morningside Church Productions Inc. settled a lawsuit with state and federal officials after promoting a health supplement called Silver Solution as a cure for COVID-19 during 11 episodes in early 2020, cbc.ca reported. The settlement required $156,000 in refunds to consumers who purchased the product, according to cbc.ca.
