The Texas Animal Friendly Program, administered by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), funds free and low-cost sterilization surgeries for dogs and cats through the sale of special vehicle license plates.
Since its implementation, it is noted that the program has awarded more than one million dollars in grants aimed at reducing pet overpopulation in different communities in the state.
Residents can purchase the “Animal Friendly” plate through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for a cost of 30 dollarsof which $22 goes directly to the “Animal Friendly Fund.” Funds raised are then distributed to public or private shelters, organizations whose primary mission is low- or no-cost sterilization, and nonprofit veterinary associations.
Today, there are two designs available, including a new model in addition to the classic design with the image of a dog and a cat.
