Thai Airways canceled 59 domestic and international flights between September 26 and October 1, 2026, after heavy flooding in Bangkok prevented hundreds of ground staff from reaching Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, stranding approximately 5,600 passenger bags. While the severe weather disrupted transport infrastructure across the capital, Thai government officials criticized airline management for operational failures, staffing deployment choices, and a slow response to external offers of assistance.

Flight Cancellations and Baggage Chaos at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Heavy rainfall flooded parts of Bangkok over a 24-hour period on September 24 and September 25, 2026, blocking roads and keeping hundreds of airline and airport employees from reporting to work. According to reports compiled by Bangkok Post, Thai Airways was forced to cancel 59 flights in total through October 1 as the carrier struggled to clear a massive backlog of 5,600 delayed bags.

The cancellations hit a wide international and domestic network. On September 29, the airline cut five international routes, including services to Dhaka, Seoul, Bengaluru, Sapporo, and New Delhi. The disruptions escalated on September 30 with the cancellation of seven domestic flights to Phuket, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani, and Udon Thani, alongside 21 international flights to destinations such as London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Manila. Four additional European routes to Paris, Brussels, Milan, and Stockholm were canceled on October 1.

Passengers reported severe delays at baggage claim areas inside Suvarnabhumi Airport, with some travelers waiting days to be reunited with their belongings. A group of Thai passengers arriving from Chengdu, China, told the Bangkok Post that the baggage hall conditions were exhausting, leaving waiting passengers looking “like zombies.”

Government Criticism of Thai Airways Management

Thai Minister of Tourism and Sports Surasak Phancharoenworakul argued that the crisis stemmed primarily from poor operational readiness and management at Thai Airways rather than the weather alone. Speaking to the Bangkok Post on September 30, Surasak noted that he personally experienced the delays when returning from Japan on a Thai Airways flight.

Surasak also questioned a management decision to assign available ground-handling staff to service other client airlines instead of prioritizing Thai Airways passengers, suggesting the move was designed to avoid contractual penalties. The tourism minister also criticized the airline's failure to cooperate with external institutions. When military personnel from the Royal Thai Air Force and the Ministry of Defense were deployed to help sort the piled-up luggage, Thai Airways reportedly failed to provide food or accommodation for the troops, forcing them to return to their bases to eat.

“Every agency tried to step in and help, but there was no positive response or cooperation from Thai Airways,” Surasak said. “I believe the Thai Airways executives need to take a more proactive approach.”

‘Total Chaos’: Thai Airways Battles Baggage Delays As Bangkok Floods Ease | NewsX World

Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulki warned that persistent service failures would ultimately damage the company’s bottom line. “If Thai Airways chooses not to safeguard the interests of its passengers, the business impact and losses incurred will ultimately return to the company itself,” Siripong stated.

Airline Response and Recovery Measures

Thai Airways CEO Chai Eamsiri conceded that the company’s initial assessment of the flood’s impact was inaccurate. Out of roughly 500 ground staff normally available, between 200 and 300 employees could not make it to work during the flooding.

To reduce pressure on ground operations and restore schedule reliability, Thai Airways slashed about 30 percent of its daily flights—down from its normal routine of roughly 110 daily flights. Chai issued a formal apology to affected passengers and announced that compensation claims were open.

To clear the remaining luggage, Thai Airways partnered with three delivery providers, including Thailand Post. Airports of Thailand (AOT) provided physical space for sorting, while the Royal Thai Air Force, the Ministry of Defense, and corporate headquarters staff contributed auxiliary personnel. The airline has not yet announced a definitive date for when normal flight operations will resume.
