felipe VI delivered his twelfth Christmas speech as King of Spain this Wednesday, marking a departure from tradition by speaking standing up for the first time since his proclamation. The speech focused on a call for politicians to prioritize “coexistence” and the “shared project” of Spain, acknowledging a growing “ennui” among citizens. He also emphasized the importance of dialogue and agreement in a world facing a crisis of trust, stating, “One’s own ideas can never be dogmas, nor those of others, threats.”
This year’s address coincided with the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the monarchy and the beginning of Spain’s transition to democracy, prompting the King to reflect on the “road traveled.” He highlighted the unprecedented transformation Spain has undergone in the past five decades, solidifying democratic freedoms, political pluralism, decentralization, openness, and prosperity.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by citizens – including the rising cost of living, housing access difficulties, and rapid technological advancements – Felipe VI underscored Spain’s strengths. He affirmed, “Spain is full of initiative and talent, and I believe that the world needs – more than ever – our sensitivity, our creativity and our ability to work, our sense of justice and equity and our resolute commitment to Europe, its principles and its values.”

Good night.40 years ago in this same Hall of Columns of the Royal Palace of Madrid the treaty by which we entered the European Communities was signed. It has also been 50 years since the beginning of our democratic transition. These anniversaries encourage me to talk to you this Christmas eve about coexistence; of our democratic coexistence, through the memory of the path traveled and trust in the present and the future.
The Transition was, above all, a collective exercise of responsibility. It arose from the shared will to build a future of freedoms based on dialogue. Those who directed that process finally managed to ensure that the Spanish people as a whole were the true protagonists of their future and fully assumed their sovereign power. Even with their differences and doubts, they knew how to overcome their disagreements and transform uncertainty into a solid starting point, without being certain of achieving what they were looking for. That courage-that of moving forward without guarantees, but united-is one of the most valuable lessons they taught us.
The result of that impulse was our 1978 constitution, the set of shared purposes on which our present and our living together are built, a framework broad enough for us all to fit in, all our diversity.
Our incorporation into the European integration process was the other decisive, exciting and mobilizing step. It meant opening up to the world, strengthening our democracy and joining a project of peace, prosperity and shared values.

The Importance of Dialogue and Respectful Coexistence
King Felipe VI underscored the necessity of open dialogue as the foundation for resolving Spain’s challenges. He called for a commitment to understanding differing perspectives, emphasizing that ideas – one’s own and those of others – should not be treated as dogmas or threats. This call for respectful discourse comes at a time of [https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/spain-political-gridlock-continues-after-failed-vote-pm-2023-12-29/](political complexity in Spain), where forming a government has proven arduous following recent elections. The King’s message implicitly encourages compromise and collaboration among political factions.
He specifically highlighted the need for empathy and prioritizing the dignity of all people, particularly the most vulnerable members of society. This aligns with Spain’s commitment to [https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/spain/](the United Nations Enduring advancement Goals], particularly those related to poverty reduction and social inclusion.
Responsibilities and Red Lines
The King’s address didn’t simply call for dialogue; it also implicitly outlined responsibilities for all citizens and public officials. He stressed the need for “special exemplarity” from those in positions of power, suggesting a higher standard of conduct and accountability. He urged everyone to actively participate in building a stronger Spain, recognizing that solutions require the commitment of all.
While not explicitly stated, the speech implies certain “red lines” – boundaries that should not be crossed in public discourse. These include resorting to dogmatism, demonizing opposing viewpoints, and prioritizing individual interests over the common good. The King cautioned against actions that could lead to the “fall of the other,” advocating for progress through agreement and mutual concessions.
King Felipe VI framed Spain not as a collection of disparate interests, but as a “shared project” – a collective endeavor to realize individual aspirations within a framework of common values. this concept resonates with the principles enshrined in the [https://www.constitucionesp.es/en/constitution](Spanish Constitution of 1978), which emphasizes national unity and the protection of essential rights.
He also reaffirmed Spain’s strong commitment to Europe, its principles, and its values. This commitment is particularly relevant given the ongoing geopolitical challenges facing the European Union, including [https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/headlines/society/20231218STO98328/eu-leaders-reach-agreement-on-migration-and-asylum-reform](migration,economic stability, and security concerns). Spain has been a key advocate for greater European integration and cooperation.
Looking Forward with Confidence
Acknowledging that challenges are inherent in any past period, King Felipe VI expressed confidence in Spain’s ability to overcome them through collective effort. He warned against the dangers of fear, which he described as a barrier to understanding and progress. He highlighted Spain’s strengths – its initiative, talent, sensitivity, creativity, and sense of justice – as assets that can contribute to a better future.
The King concluded his address with best wishes for the holiday season and the new year, extending greetings in Spanish, Basque, Catalan, and Galician – *Eguberri on, Bon Nadal, Boas Festas* – reflecting the linguistic and cultural diversity of Spain.
