Bells Signal the Start of the 555th Fair
At 12:00 p.m. this Saturday, the bells of the Martinskirche will toll, signaling the official start of the 555th Basler Herbstmesse. The spectacle arrives with 460 total offerings, a collection that includes 25 large rides and 38 children’s rides.
President Cramer Opens Festivities with Free Rides
Festivities begin shortly before the bells, with Basel government president Conradin Cramer delivering an 11:45 a.m. address. Early arrivals are in for a treat: the first 15 minutes of operation feature free rides on the rides. Attendees will also be greeted with complimentary punch and balloons.
Expanded Transit and the Mäss-Drämmli
Visitors will need to change their routines to get around the fairgrounds as public transit adjusts to manage the crowds. The special “Mäss-Drämmli” (Line 22) will bridge the gap between Bahnhof SBB and Messeplatz, stopping at Kirschgarten, Bankverein, Kunstmuseum, and Wettsteinplatz. This service runs Friday and Saturday from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tram lines 15 and 16 will link Bruderholz to Messeplatz, while line 1 will extend to Badischer Bahnhof on Friday and Saturday nights and throughout the day on Sundays.

Safety Risks Force Zone Closures and Crowd Control
Safety concerns will force the closure of specific zones this Sunday. Petersplatz, the Rosentalanlage, and the tree grove at Münsterplatz are off-limits due to the risk of falling branches. Reopening these sites remains subject to further assessment. Meanwhile, officials are keeping a close eye on density at the food mile in front of the Messe parking garage. If congestion peaks, authorities will step in to regulate the flow, potentially causing wait times for patrons.
Digital Access Without the App
The dedicated Herbstmesse mobile application has been retired. In its place, organizers are directing visitors to the official event website and their Instagram channel for real-time updates and full programming. These digital channels are essential for finding the 37 new attractions, which range from traditional market stalls and game booths to confectionery shops and street food vendors.
