Creative Vision
The Duffer Brothers, known for their work on “Stranger Things,” were drawn to the concept of “The Boroughs” as a fresh take on stories featuring older characters. They emphasized their desire to avoid portraying aging as a punchline, instead focusing on realistic portrayals of individuals facing both everyday and supernatural challenges. They likened the show’s spirit to Ron Howard’s “Cocoon,” a film that explored similar themes of community and unexpected adventure.
Addiss and Matthews shared that the series stemmed from their childhood interests – Addiss’s fascination with monsters and Matthews’s early planning for retirement – resulting in a unique blend of genres, and tones. They aimed to create a show that could appeal to multiple generations, fostering a shared viewing experience for families.
