The Man Who Is Paying to See the Future
Bill Nguyen, a serial entrepreneur known for selling multiple companies to Apple and launching the voice-recognition startup Olive, is building an AI system designed to operate as his proxy. This system goes beyond a traditional chatbot, aiming to create a virtual body double that can build decisions and take actions on his behalf by learning from his communications, values, and daily interactions.
According to Nguyen, his personal AI assistant has all but taken over his life. Each morning, he consults the agenda crafted by the AI before following its directions throughout the day. The AI has permission to email people on his behalf and occasionally sets up in-person meetings with individuals he has never met. It also listens to conversations he has with his three children and suggests parenting advice, which Nguyen says has improved his relationship with them.
The development of this AI system includes significant hardware investments. Nguyen recently received a high-end desktop computer featuring a top-of-the-line Nvidia RTX 5090 graphics card, which he believes will enhance his ability to train the AI model. Even as he did not order the machine himself, he suspects his AI assistant initiated the purchase as part of its ongoing development.
Nguyen’s project reflects a broader trend in AI development where multistep agents orchestrate external systems to perform complex tasks. As noted by attorney Christopher Ott in a Room for Disagreement piece, such deployments raise important privacy considerations that must be addressed as the technology evolves.
By integrating AI into nearly every aspect of his personal and professional life, Nguyen is testing the boundaries of how closely an artificial system can mirror human decision-making — not just to predict the future, but to actively shape it through autonomous action.
