The Social Reckoning Release and Aaron Sorkin’s Vision for the Facebook Sequel

“Mark Zuckerberg Will Love The Social Reckoning,” declares a Sony Pictures marketing spot running on Instagram and Facebook, setting up the October 9 release of Aaron Sorkin’s new film about whistleblower Frances Haugen and The Facebook Files, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Jeremy Strong Transforms into Mark Zuckerberg

Jeremy Strong plays a powerful, adult Mark Zuckerberg in a performance that strays far from Jesse Eisenberg’s earlier portrayal in 2010’s The Social Network. Sorkin’s script incorporates real-world events, including Haugen’s Senate testimony where she stated the company is “buying its profits with health and safety,” alongside depictions of the January 6 Capitol riot.

Sorkin Explains Reshoots and Omission of Donald Trump

Director Aaron Sorkin clarified in an interview with Vanity Fair—reported by Variety—that the film’s recent reshoots had nothing to do with initial mixed reactions to the trailer, but were instead intended simply to make a good movie better. Sorkin also addressed the exclusion of Donald Trump by name from the script. He stated that he was never asked by studio leadership to omit Trump, but promised Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman unprompted that the film would feature no Trump signage or Make America Great Again slogans to keep the focus on divisiveness and extremism rather than partisan politics.

Secret Test Screenings and Legal Script Revisions

To maintain strict security during production, Sony Pictures held limited test screenings consisting of approximately 70 people on the studio lot, all of whom were company employees, as noted by Variety. Sorkin noted that this did not make for a great polling sample due to the focus on secrecy. Outside legal counsel hired by Sony also required script changes, such as removing an expletive from a line where a senior executive refers to an ex-employee, unless the studio could prove a real executive used that exact phrase.
