Nearly 80,000 people demonstrated this Saturday in the streets of Munich, according to the German police, to protest against the Iranian regime in the middle of the international security conference being held this week, one of the most important forums of the year in foreign policy.

They have cried out against the authorities of the country, which experienced turbulent days last month due to protests against the Tehran regime and which were violently repressed.

The Munich Circle group has organized this march under the slogan “Human Rights and Freedom for Iran: International solidarity with the Iranian people.” taking advantage of the presence of political and military officials from around the world.

The Iranian Government recognizes 3,117 deaths in the repression of the demonstrations and opposition organizations such as HRANA, based in the United States, put the death toll at 7,005, although they continue to verify more than 11,600 possible deaths, and estimate around 51,000 arrests.

The riots broke out at the end of December and reached its most violent point on January 8 and 9. Although the protests have since subsided, activists continue to count deaths and fear that the death toll, in the thousands, could rise.

Pahlaví stresses in Munich that he has no intention of coming to power

Reza Pahlavi, the heir of the Iranian shah deposed in 1979 by the Islamic Revolution, stressed this Saturday that he does not want to occupy power in Iran.

“I told my compatriots, I am not running for office or a job. I am not seeking power or a title. I do not want to put the crown on my head or be the next president,” Pahlavi said at a press conference on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (CSM).

“My only goal is to see the day when Iranian people may finally be able to choose their future democratic government. The day that happens, I consider it to be the end of my political mission in life,” he added, and was convinced of having the support of the Iranians.

“People in Iran believe in my leadership, because they know that I have nothing to gain,” said the heir to the Shah of Iran, who said he “wanted nothing in return” for his commitment to political change in his country of origin.
