Three drones breached Moldovan airspace within a single day on September 30, prompting temporary airspace closures and drawing condemnation from the defense minister. The incidents unfolded amid heavy Russian strikes across neighboring Ukraine, intensifying security concerns in Chisinau over regional spillover.
Three Airspace Violations in Twenty-Four Hours
Moldova’s Ministry of Defense recorded three separate incursions on September 30. The first event occurred early in the morning at approximately 5:40 a.m., when a drone entered the country before crashing near the village of Gârbovăț in the Anenii Noi district, according to police reports cited by Radio Svoboda. General Police Inspectorate data indicated the device detonated at an altitude of 40 meters after striking a communication line pole. A second jet-type drone crossed the eastern border through the breakaway region of Transnistria later that day, forcing aviation authorities to temporarily close airspace over the northern and central regions.
Evening Incursion and Aviation Restrictions
The third violation took place at 8:45 p.m., according to the Ministry of Defense. An object crossed the border from the village of Șerșenți in the Vinnytsia region of Ukraine toward Slobozia Rășcov in Transnistria, later moving toward Țîpova before disappearing from monitoring systems near Brănești in the Orhei district. Air traffic controllers temporarily closed airspace in the central part of the country at 8:45 p.m. and reopened it at 9:09 p.m. The Air Operations Service continues to monitor Moldovan airspace in coordination with international partners.
Official Response and Previous Incidents
Moldovan Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi stated that the second incident involving the jet drone marked the 84th time such a device had entered national airspace. “The Russian Federation puts the lives of our citizens in danger, and it doesn’t matter on which side [of the Dniester] they are or what language they speak,” Nosatîi said in statements reported by Radio Svoboda.
