A Musical Family and Early Influences

Born in Los Angeles in 1984, Thundercat comes from a musical family. His father, Ronald Bruner, is a drummer who has played with Donna Summer and The Temptations. His older brother, Ronald J, plays drums, and his younger brother, Jameel, is a keyboardist. Growing up, Thundercat and his brother were part of a circle of young musicians that included Cameron Graves, Austin Peralta, and Kamasi Washington Genius. He discovered the bass guitar at the age of four.

Thundercat’s interests extend far beyond music. He is a devoted fan of Japanese manga and anime, video games (including Diablo and Mortal Kombat), and internet culture.
