Tirana hassan is teh Chief Executive Officer of MSF USA, appointed in January 2026. She brings a wealth of experience to the organization, cultivated over decades dedicated to humanitarian and human rights advocacy worldwide. Prior to joining Doctors Without Borders, Hassan served as the Executive Director of Human Rights Watch from 2022 to 2025.In this role, she oversaw a global team of over 500 staff operating in more than 90 countries, leading the organization’s impactful work in documenting and advocating against human rights abuses. Her leadership at Human Rights Watch encompassed oversight of advocacy, communications, legal affairs, and program progress, including extensive field work investigating war crimes and attacks on civilians, with a particular focus on the protection of humanitarian workers and medical facilities.

Hassan’s connection to the humanitarian sector began in 2007 with Doctors Without Borders, where she served as a humanitarian affairs officer in Somalia. She has also held leadership positions at Amnesty International, directing their crisis response program, and provided consultancy services to UNICEF and Save the children, working across East and west Africa, as well as South and Southeast Asia. Early in her career, she contributed to the establishment of a refugee legal service in Australia, providing crucial support to asylum seekers. Her professional background also includes direct social work experience with children in therapeutic care and mental health services.

Hassan holds honors degrees in both social work and law from Australian universities, complemented by a Master’s degree in International Human Rights Law from Oxford University. Her diverse educational background and extensive field experience position her as a uniquely qualified leader in the global humanitarian landscape.
