How the Armed Man Got Close to the Trump White House Correspondents’ Dinner Event
Following a shooting incident outside the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday night, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche addressed how the suspect managed to approach the secure perimeter where President Donald Trump and other senior officials were attending. Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week” the morning after the event, Blanche confirmed that the individual was likely targeting administration officials but emphasized that existing security protocols ultimately prevented harm.
“The man barely got past the perimeter. And so when you have a perimeter designed to preserve people safe, like President Trump, and it works — that’s something that should be applauded,” Blanche told host George Stephanopoulos. He reiterated that law enforcement and the Secret Service successfully protected everyone present, including the president, vice president, and other members of the presidential line of succession who were in attendance.
Blanche described the suspect as acting alone and identified him as Cole Allen of Torrance, California, based on law enforcement sources. The incident occurred near the main magnetometer screening area at the Washington Hilton hotel, where the dinner was held. Despite the proximity to the secure zone, Blanche maintained that “the system worked” due to the layered security response already in place for the high-profile gathering.
He also echoed President Trump’s sentiment that normal public engagement must continue, stating, “We are not going to stop living; we’re not going to stop being out there,” and affirmed that the administration would persist in public appearances despite the threat.
The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner remains one of the most heavily secured annual events in Washington, D.C., routinely drawing senior government figures, journalists, and celebrities. In the aftermath, officials confirmed that the suspect is in custody and under investigation, with no further details released about motive or potential accomplices.
