Tokyo College of Cycle Design: Pioneering Bicycle Education in Asia

For those passionate about bicycle design, engineering, or maintenance, the Tokyo College of Cycle Design (TCD) offers a unique educational pathway. Established in April 2012 in Shibuya, Tokyo, TCD stands as Japan’s first—and currently Asia’s only—institution of higher education solely dedicated to bicycle-related studies.1

A Specialized Curriculum

TCD provides comprehensive programs ranging from two to four years in duration.2 The curriculum is built around four core pillars:

  • Bicycle Building: Students develop practical skills in frame construction, component assembly, and tool usage. The first year focuses on foundational techniques, progressing to more complex designs like piste bikes, BMX, and mountain bikes in subsequent years.2
  • Bicycle Maintenance: This program covers bicycle assembly, maintenance, and repair, starting with basic principles. Students learn to handle various bicycle types, understand component functionality, and apply ergonomic principles for accurate measurements. Completion prepares students for bicycle engineer and safety mechanic certifications.2
  • Bicycle Design: Students explore industrial design methodologies specifically applied to bicycles, including sketching, illustration, and 3D modeling of components like carbon wheels using CAD software.2
  • Bicycle Creation: Aimed at third and fourth-year students, this program emphasizes creative projects designed to showcase student talent to the industry and the public, including collaborations with companies and participation in exhibitions.2

Programs and Departments

TCD offers several departments and courses:

  • Department of Engineering Design
  • Sport Cycle Product Course (2 years, coed, daytime)3
  • Cycle Creation Course (3 years, coed, daytime)3

International Student Support

TCD welcomes international students, offering student visas valid for up to two years and three months. The Foreign Student Center provides assistance with residency status, housing, and other aspects of life in Japan.1

Career Support

The college provides year-round career support services, including counseling, job search seminars, and assistance with both employment and further education opportunities.1

Important Note

Although TCD offers support for international students, all course instruction is currently conducted in Japanese.2
