New England Patriots legend Tom Brady has taken a ton of heat this week for saying “I don’t have a dog in this fight” when asked who he was backing in Sunday’s Super Bowl matchup between his former team and the Seattle Seahawks.
It seems he must have heard the backlash, as he shared an image of him with Patriots owner Robert Kraft on his Instagram Stories on Friday night, saying: “You know I got your back RKK” and “Get that 7th ring so we can match.”
He followed it up with a second photo of him, Kraft and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, adding, “I bet even Roger is rooting for you.”
Both posts also tagged the Patriots.
The posts were a hard pivot from Brady’s attempts earlier in the week to distance himself from the team he helped win six Super Bowls.
He made the controversial comment during the “Let’s Go!” Sirius XM podcast on Monday, and it didn’t settle well with former and current Patriots players, not to mention longtime fans of the GOAT.
“Listen, I don’t have a dog in the fight in this one,” he said. “May the best team win.”
“In terms of the Patriots,” he added, “this is a new chapter in New England. And I’m glad everyone’s embraced the Mike Vrabel regime, all the amazing players that have worked so hard to get their club to this position. We did it for 20 years. There was a little bit of a hiatus in there, but the Patriots are back, and it’s a very exciting time for everyone in New England.”
It was a surprising comment from Brady, who built his career in New England, and it had many wondering where was his love and loyalty for Kraft and the Patriots? It appears his Instagram posts were an attempt to correct that narrative.
When Patriots linebacker Robert Spillane was asked what he thought of Brady’s comment, he said, “Personally it makes me sick.”
Former linebacker Tedy Bruschi also had some strong words for Brady, saying unlike him, he has “a big ass dog in the race.”
“I’m telling you that right now, that’s my boy right there you know, Vrabel, eight-year teammate, like a brother of mine, I mean all of us really I mean, it’s like we’ve got a dog in the fight, my dog is big and I’m cheering for him,” Bruschi told WEEI.
Vince Wilfork called also Brady out on WEEI at Radio Row, saying, “That’s bull crap Tom. Come on now, all that political, this ain’t political, it ain’t political, what it is, Raiders ain’t in it, say what it is, what you see.”
“Look at the end of the day, if you’re a Patriot for life, you know what it is, don’t give me that political bull crap, that’s just what it is,” Wilford added. “If you don’t think we’re gonna win, just pick Seattle then, don’t straddle the fence, don’t straddle the fence.”
