Google Develops New TV Streamer With Microphones and Proximity Sensors

Google is developing a new generation of its Google TV Streamer featuring built-in microphones, presence-sensing technology, a faster processor, and expanded storage, Yahoo Finance reported, citing 9to5Google. The upcoming device aims to let users issue voice commands without picking up a remote control, while proximity sensors could automatically display ambient data like time, weather, and photos when someone enters a living room.

Hardware Upgrades and Room-Aware Gemini Integration

The reported hardware updates expand upon the current Google TV Streamer that debuted in September 2024 for $99.99. Alphabet’s Google raised the U.S. price of that existing 32GB model by $50 to $149.99 on August 31, citing rising component costs. The proposed successor would house far-field microphones in apertures on the physical chassis, allowing direct access to the Gemini assistant across the room. Google began distributing Gemini to the current Google TV Streamer in November 2025, enabling conversational requests for movie recommendations, recipe help, and program recaps. TCL has already utilized similar presence-sensing technology on a Google TV to activate screensavers and show weather updates when a user approaches the television.

Component Costs Challenge Pricing Strategy

The addition of advanced proximity sensors, built-in microphones, and a quicker processor introduces a marketing challenge against lower-cost alternatives. Walmart’s Onn 4K Pro retailed for around $60 in September while supplying standard Google TV capabilities. Google has not yet disclosed the unreleased gadget, its retail price, or an anticipated debut date.
