WWE’s Scrapped Plans for Bron Breakker: A Tag Team Pairing with Tony D’Angelo
Early plans for Bron Breakker’s WWE NXT career envisioned the rising star as part of a tag team with Tony D’Angelo, a concept that ultimately shifted as NXT underwent a rebranding to NXT 2.0. The revelation came from D’Angelo himself during an appearance on the No-Contest Wrestling podcast.
Initial Tag Team Concept
According to D’Angelo, WWE initially intended to pair him with Breakker as a tag team, drawing inspiration from the iconic Steiner Brothers. “When we first got in, me and Bron were in a tag together. So we were doing that for a minute. Not on TV, but they were priming us, ‘This is what you’re gonna do,’ kinda like the new age Steiner Brothers type of deal,” D’Angelo explained. [F4WOnline]
The NXT 2.0 Shift and Change of Plans
However, the plans were altered with the launch of NXT 2.0 in 2021. Road Dogg reportedly informed D’Angelo that the tag team idea was scrapped as the company sought a “clean slate” and individual paths for its talent. “I just remember one day, Road Dogg came up and he was like, ‘Hey man, we’re not doing this,’ and this is right when 2.0 first kicked off, they kinda just, ‘Clean slate, everybody, we kinda have a lane for you,’ and I had to figure out quick what I was gonna do,” D’Angelo recalled. Individual Successes
Following the change in direction, Breakker was positioned as a singles competitor, eventually becoming a two-time NXT Champion before his move to the main roster. [eWrestlingNews] D’Angelo also found success as a singles star, winning the NXT North American Championship in October 2024.
Tag Team Championships with Different Partners
Ironically, both Breakker and D’Angelo would later achieve success as tag team champions, albeit with different partners. Breakker won the NXT Tag Team Championship with Baron Corbin, whereas D’Angelo secured the titles alongside Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo. Notably, Breakker and Corbin defeated D’Angelo and Lorenzo to win the NXT Tag Team Championships in February 2024. [F4WOnline]
