Complete of an Era: Towey’s, Ballaghaderreen’s Beloved Shop, Closes After 83 Years

Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon, is bidding farewell to a local institution as Towey’s grocery and newsagents closes its doors for the final time today, Saturday, February 28, 2026, after more than 83 years in business. The shop, which evolved from a simple grocery into a community hub offering news, petrol, a cafe and even boarding house accommodation, will officially close at 3 p.m.

A Family Legacy

Mattie and Annie Towey first opened their grocery shop on Main Street in 1943. Over the decades, the business expanded to meet the needs of the growing community, becoming a central part of life in Ballaghaderreen and the surrounding areas. The family home remains part of the building, a testament to their long-standing commitment to the town.

More Than Just a Shop

Towey’s was known for being more than just a commercial enterprise; it was a welcoming space where customers were greeted with warmth and a helping hand was always available. The Towey family were known for their generosity and willingness to assist anyone in need, at any time of day or night.

Emotional Farewell

Imelda Towey, daughter of Mattie and Annie, and her eight siblings, who all grew up working in the shop, are overseeing the closure. The family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and well-wishes from the community in recent weeks. Imelda, a passionate GAA supporter, received a heartwarming tribute from the Ballaghaderreen GAA senior team and management on Friday night, who presented her with flowers and a jersey as reported by the Western People.

Looking Ahead

Imelda Towey is looking forward to retirement and pursuing her passion for sport, particularly Gaelic football. The Towey family has expressed their deep gratitude to their staff, suppliers, and the community for their support over the many decades of service. The Roscommon Herald documented the closure, marking the end of a significant chapter in Ballaghaderreen’s history.

A Community Landmark

For over eight decades, Towey’s served as an institution for the people of Ballaghaderreen. Its closure marks the end of an era and a significant loss for the community. Hi Connacht also reported on the shop’s final day.
