Towson Women’s Tennis Set to Host Coppin State and Visit Drexel
Towson, Md. – The Towson University women’s tennis team (5-5) will continue its spring season this week with a pair of matches, beginning with a home contest against Coppin State on Tuesday, followed by a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) matchup at Drexel on Friday.
Coppin State Match Details
The match against Coppin State was originally scheduled for March 6 but was postponed due to inclement weather. Coppin State enters the contest with a 0-4 record, having faced George Washington, Lafayette, George Mason, and UDC.
CAA Competition at Drexel
Towson will then travel to Philadelphia to take on Drexel (5-4) in a CAA conference game. Drexel is currently undefeated at home in 2026. Both teams have faced common opponents this season, with victories over Delaware State and losses to William & Mary and James Madison.
Player Performances
Ashira Murray and Gaia Montecchi have demonstrated strong performances in singles play this season. Montecchi boasts an 8-2 record, securing wins on courts 1, 2, and 3. Murray similarly holds an 8-2 record, with four wins each at the No. 4, and No. 5 positions.
Recent Honors
Ashira Murray was named the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Player of the Week on February 24 after achieving a 7-0 record with a pair of three-set victories. Previously, Chandrè Boshoff and Kiersten Tambe were recognized as the CAA Women’s Doubles Team of the Week for their 3-0 record at No. 1 doubles. This marks the first time Towson has received multiple conference Player of the Week honors since 2016.
Coaching Milestone
With a win over Georgetown on February 20, head coach Jamie Peterson moved into third place on the all-time wins list with 79 victories, surpassing Doug Neagle. Ken Volk (106 wins) and Peter Walten (86 wins) remain the program’s all-time leaders in coaching wins.
Fall Season Recap
During the fall semester, the Tigers participated in four events and secured a head-to-head victory against Rider. Sophomores Gaia Montecchi and Kiersten Tambe, along with junior Chandrè Boshoff, qualified for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championship in October.
International Representation
The Towson women’s tennis roster features a diverse international presence, with players from South Africa, Italy, England, and Canada.
Coach Peterson’s Background
Towson head coach Jamie Peterson was a two-time team captain for the Towson men’s tennis team from 1991-1995, finishing his career with a 64-35 record. He led the Tigers to consecutive ECAC championship appearances in 1993 and 1994.
