Trawler Fire Off Sète: Three Sailors Rescued

On Monday, May 9, 2026, three sailors were rescued off the coast of Sète, in the Hérault department of France, after a fire broke out on their trawler. The incident occurred approximately 20 km from the coast, with smoke visible from the shore.

Rescue Operation

The rescue operation involved a coordinated effort from multiple agencies. Two sea rescue boats, a Civil Security helicopter (Dragon 34), and two other trawlers diverted their course to assist in the search for the crew. The three sailors were forced to abandon ship and enter the water, drifting up to a kilometer from the burning vessel.

Condition of the Sailors

According to Fabrice Armand, president of SNSM Sète, the sailors were found fatigued and clinging to their life jackets. The helicopter crew recovered one sailor, while the sea rescue boats retrieved the remaining two. All three were treated for exhaustion, hypothermia, and smoke inhalation, receiving oxygen and warm clothing. They were subsequently hospitalized but are reported to be out of danger.

Cause of the Fire

The cause of the fire remains unknown as of Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The sailors were unable to provide an explanation for the incident.
