Colbert Accuses Trump Administration of Censorship After CBS Pulls Talarico Interview
Stephen Colbert, host of CBS’s The Late Show, accused the Trump administration of attempting to suppress dissent after CBS News blocked the airing of his interview with Texas State Representative James Talarico. The move, announced on Monday night, has sparked a debate over the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) equal-time rule and its potential application to late-night talk shows.
The Interview and CBS’s Decision
Colbert explained to his audience that network lawyers directly informed him that the interview with Talarico could not be broadcast. According to The Fresh York Times, this decision stemmed from new guidance issued by the FCC regarding political interviews on late-night shows. The interview was subsequently posted on Colbert’s YouTube page, where it has garnered over 2.7 million views as of Tuesday evening.
The Equal-Time Rule and FCC Guidance
The controversy centers around the FCC’s equal-time rule, a decades-old doctrine requiring broadcasters to provide equal airtime opportunities to candidates running for the same public office. Traditionally, an exemption existed for news interviews and talk show interviews with politicians. However, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced in January that talk shows might no longer be exempt. As reported by The Independent, Carr stated that a program “motivated by partisan purposes” would not be entitled to the exemption.
Notably, when questioned about the application of this guidance to conservative talk radio stations, Carr indicated he did not foresee the same need for readjustment in that realm.
Colbert’s Response and Accusations
Colbert strongly criticized the policy change, labeling it hypocritical and accusing the Trump administration of attempting to silence criticism. The Guardian reported that Colbert quipped, “Sir, you’re chairman of the FCC, so FCC you,” suggesting Carr himself was motivated by partisan purposes. He further asserted that the administration’s goal was to prevent anyone from speaking negatively about Donald Trump on television, given Trump’s frequent television viewing habits.
CBS’s Response and Potential Motives
CBS initially denied prohibiting The Late Show from broadcasting the Talarico interview. However, according to HuffPost, the situation may be linked to Paramount Skydance, CBS’s parent company, and its potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The FCC approves media company mergers, and some speculate CBS is attempting to curry favor with the Trump administration to facilitate the deal. CBS has as well announced the cancellation of Colbert’s show, attributing it to “financial reasons.”
The Broader Context
This incident is not isolated. The Trump administration previously intervened to briefly suspend Jimmy Kimmel from ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! following Kimmel’s comments about a shooting involving a conservative activist. The FCC is also reportedly investigating whether ABC’s The View violated the equal-time rule by interviewing Talarico earlier in February.
