US President Donald Trump Calls Brazilian Election Disgraceful as Flávio Bolsonaro Flees to Florida

US President Donald Trump described Brazil’s presidential election as “disgraceful,” stepping up his criticism and declining to say whether he recognized leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory over right-wing contender Flávio Bolsonaro. The remarks came as Flávio Bolsonaro fled to the United States to start a self-imposed exile, insisting he is his country’s rightful leader despite his defeat in the presidential run-off.

“I think the election was a disgrace in Brazil,” Mr Trump told reporters as he headed on a midterm election campaign trip, adding that the outcome was a “very great embarrassment to the people of Brazil.” Mr Trump pointed to the reaction of the Brazilian stock market, which dropped after Mr Lula da Silva’s victory.

The US president’s stance hardened from his comments a day prior, when he called the vote “very strange” while maintaining he would not get involved. Mr Lula da Silva won Sunday’s election with 51.8% of the vote, while a 52 to 48 per cent majority followed a record turnout.

The US Department of Homeland Security stated that the Bolsonaro family members were inspected and cleared in accordance with applicable immigration laws and procedures. Mr Lula da Silva condemned the departure, calling it a “shameful” act.

Global Repercussions and Domestic Challenges for Lula da Silva’s Fourth Term

The election outcome marks a historic turnaround, as Mr Lula da Silva secured a fourth term after trailing the far-right candidate in the first round three weeks prior.

The victory provides immediate relief for environmental defenders and advocates for the Amazon rainforest. During the 2019-2022 term of Jair Bolsonaro—who is under house arrest in Brazil after attempting to overturn his own electoral loss—Amazon deforestation surged by 59.5%. By contrast, the Lula administration saw a 71.2% fall in deforestation.

Despite the historic win, Mr Lula da Silva faces a formidable domestic landscape. The Liberal Party associated with the Bolsonaro family made strong gains in Congress during the legislative elections held three weeks prior to the run-off, leaving the incoming president to navigate a hostile legislature. Furthermore, his administration faces severe economic constraints, including national debt, inflation, and high interest rates.
