Seasoned diplomat: Trump congratulates former envoy to US Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Delhi LG appointment US President Donald Trump on Friday congratulated Taranjit Singh Sandhu on his appointment as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, lauding the former ambassador’s contribution to strengthening India-US ties and wishing him success in his new role. Trump shared the message on Truth Social, stating, “Congratulations to Taranjit Sandhu on becoming the new Lt Governor of Delhi! As a seasoned Diplomat and former Ambassador to the United States, he has always shown deep commitment to strengthening the U.S.-India relationship,” Trump shared. “Wishing him success in leading Delhi’s progress, and furthering global ties!” he added. Sandhu took the oath of office at Lok Niwas on March 11, 2026, administered by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya. The ceremony was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, cabinet members, Union ministers, and senior officials. A 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Sandhu brings over three decades of diplomatic experience. He previously served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 to January 2024 and as High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka from January 2017 to January 2020. He succeeded Vinai Kumar Saxena, who had held the post for nearly four years. His appointment was announced by President Droupadi Murmu as part of a broader reshuffle of gubernatorial positions. In his inaugural address, Sandhu called for a “solution-oriented approach” across political lines to tackle the challenges faced by the national capital, emphasizing the need for cooperation among all stakeholders. He highlighted that Delhi had long been associated with his professional journey and expressed confidence in collaborative efforts to drive the city’s progress.
