The security alert began in the early hours of Sunday when a local farmer in Whelford dialed 999 at 1.36am after discovering three vans blocking a road near RAF Fairford, a military base used in recent months by US bombers to launch airstrikes against Iran. It has since emerged that one of the suspects called the police roughly an hour before the farmer reported the activity, as first reported by The Times.

Counter-terrorism police confirmed that no improvised explosive devices were found during searches of the vans, though officers recovered a quantity of petrol to use as an accelerant. Head of UK counter-terrorism policing assistant commissioner Laurence Taylor stated during an update outside New Scotland Yard that the five suspects released on bail remain under investigation and face strict conditions. Police cordons near the base are expected to be completely lifted, and searches of the London homes of the five suspects have been completed.

Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the suspected plot clearly involves the hand of a foreign actor, though he declined to provide further details. Donald Trump criticized the British authorities during remarks on Tuesday evening, stating that while the US was involved in the investigation, the suspects should not have been granted bail.

Speculation regarding potential involvement by Iran remains widespread among investigators, who are examining whether Tehran tasked proxies to carry out acts on British soil. The Iranian embassy in London has fiercely denied any involvement in the Gloucestershire events.
