Trump Administration Offers Ceasefire Plan as Iran War Escalates
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has offered Iran a 15-point ceasefire plan aimed at temporarily halting the war in the Middle East, as the Pentagon simultaneously orders thousands of Marines, paratroopers and a warship to the region.
Ceasefire Proposal and Iranian Response
The plan, presented to Iranian leadership on Tuesday, broadly includes a 30-day ceasefire and sanctions relief for Iran in exchange for a series of U.S. Demands, according to the Associated Press and other outlets. However, the Islamic Republic dismissed the proposal on Wednesday, criticizing the White House’s terms as “excessive” and unrealistic, as reported by Iranian state-run media.
Key provisions of the U.S. Plan include limitations on Tehran’s missile stockpiles and the permanent finish to its nuclear program, as well as a cessation of support for regional militias like Hezbollah and the lifting of its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. These provisions have been previously identified as non-starters for Iran, which views its missile arsenal and regional alliances as crucial to its national security.
“Iran will end the war when it decides to do so and when its own conditions are met,” an Iranian official stated to state media. “Not when Trump envisions its conclusion.”
Iran’s terms for ending the conflict include a halt to “aggression and assassinations,” an end to fighting on all fronts, enforceable guarantees against renewed hostilities, compensation for war damage, and formal recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has emphasized that Iran seeks a comprehensive “end of war” encompassing the lifting of sanctions and guarantees for peaceful nuclear enrichment for energy and medical applications.
Conflicting Signals and Diplomatic Doubts
Iranian officials have expressed skepticism regarding the Trump administration’s diplomatic efforts, citing past experiences as evidence of deception. They claim to have previously made clear their lack of interest in developing nuclear weapons, yet the military campaign was launched regardless. Conflicting media reports further muddy the situation, with some suggesting elements of the proposal are still under review, while others portray an outright rejection.
This Iranian response contrasts with President Trump’s assertion that negotiations are progressing. “We have had very, very strong talks,” he said on Sunday in Florida. “We have points, major points of agreement. I would say almost all points of agreement will at some point very, very soon meet.”
Israel’s Role and Troop Deployments
Adding complexity, Israel, which continues routine bombing campaigns within Iran, has remained outside of the direct talks. President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the peace deal in a phone call on Tuesday, with Netanyahu stating that Trump “believes there is an opportunity” to achieve U.S.-Israeli war objectives through an agreement “that will safeguard our vital interests.” He also affirmed the continuation of strikes in both Iran and Lebanon, stating, “We will safeguard our vital interests in any scenario.”
The White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated the president has a “unique skill” in securing ally support for his plans, but did not confirm Netanyahu’s commitment to a ceasefire.
The Pentagon is deploying an additional 2,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, supplementing the 5,000 Marines and thousands of sailors already en route. Approximately 50,000 Marines are currently stationed in the region.
Economic Impact and International Response
Iranian retaliatory strikes have disrupted energy production and shipping in the Persian Gulf, raising global concerns about supply shortages. Oil prices, which had previously surged above $120 per barrel, experienced a decline this week amid hopes for a ceasefire.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an end to the fighting, stating that the conflict “has broken past limits even leaders thought imaginable,” and emphasizing the deepening human suffering and devastating global economic impact.
