Trump Hosts Latin American Leaders at Doral Amidst Global Crises

DORAL, Fla. — President Donald Trump is set to gather with Latin American leaders on Saturday at his Miami-area golf club, Trump National Doral Miami, as his administration seeks to demonstrate a continued commitment to U.S. Foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere despite ongoing international challenges.

Summit Follows Maduro Capture and Iran Conflict

The gathering, dubbed the “Shield of the Americas” summit, occurs just two months after a U.S. Military operation led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who now faces drug conspiracy charges in the U.S. Simultaneously, the U.S. Is navigating the fallout from its recent military campaign with Israel against Iran, a conflict that has resulted in casualties and global market disruption.

President Trump’s schedule includes attending the dignified transfer of the six U.S. Troops killed in a drone strike on a command center in Kuwait, following the U.S.-Israel campaign against Iran.

Focus on Western Hemisphere Dominance

The summit aims to refocus attention on the Western Hemisphere, with Trump vowing to reassert U.S. Dominance in the region and counter Chinese economic influence. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized this shift, stating that previous administrations had neglected the region, opting for a “benign neglect” that was detrimental to U.S. Interests.

Attendees and Origins of the Summit

Leaders from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago have confirmed their attendance. The idea for this summit emerged after the cancellation of the 10th Summit of the Americas, which was scrapped during preparations for the U.S. Military buildup in Venezuela last year.

The Dominican Republic, under pressure from the White House, had barred Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela from participating in the regional gathering. However, after leaders from Colombia and Mexico threatened to withdraw in protest, and with no commitment from Trump to attend, the Dominican Republic postponed the event, citing “deep differences” within the region.

“Shield of the Americas” Vision

The “Shield of the Americas” moniker reflects Trump’s “America First” foreign policy, leveraging U.S. Military and intelligence assets in the region to a degree not seen since the Cold War.

Key Absences

Notably absent from the summit will be the leaders of Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, traditionally key partners in U.S. Regional strategy.

Countering Chinese Influence

Since returning to office, Trump has prioritized countering Chinese influence in the Western Hemisphere. His administration’s national security strategy outlines a “Trump Corollary” to the Monroe Doctrine, targeting Chinese infrastructure projects, military cooperation, and investment in the region’s resource industries.

Recent actions include pressuring Panama to withdraw from China’s Belt and Road Initiative and reviewing port contracts held by a Hong Kong-based firm, with threats to revisit control of the Panama Canal. The capture of Maduro and pledges regarding Venezuela also aim to disrupt oil shipments to China and potentially bring Venezuela into Washington’s sphere of influence.

Regional Reluctance to Sever Ties with China

Despite these efforts, leaders in the region have been hesitant to completely sever ties with China, as China’s trade-focused diplomacy addresses critical financial needs and infrastructure gaps. In contrast, Trump has reduced foreign assistance to the region while prioritizing immigration enforcement, a policy unpopular across the hemisphere.

New Envoy Appointed

Ahead of the summit, President Trump announced the appointment of Kristi Noem, recently removed as Department of Homeland Security secretary, as his special envoy for the Shield of the Americas. Noem stated that Trump will announce “a big agreement” at the summit focused on combating cartels and drug trafficking throughout the Western Hemisphere.
