President Trump has vetoed a bill to fund a major drinking water project in Colorado, marking his first veto of his current term. the Finish the arkansas Valley Conduit (AVC) Act passed unanimously in both the house and Senate.
The veto follows Trump’s promise of retaliation against Colorado for the imprisonment of Tina Peters, convicted on state charges for attempting to tamper with voting systems during the 2020 presidential election.
The Arkansas Valley Conduit is a decades-long project aimed at providing safe drinking water to 39 communities on the Eastern Plains between Pueblo and Lamar. The region’s groundwater contains high levels of salt, and some wells release radioactive materials.
This pipeline represents the final phase of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, initially approved in 1962, with costs nearly doubling in recent years.
The project falls within the district of Republican Rep.Lauren Boebert, who recently challenged the trump administration to release the Jeffrey Epstein files. Colorado’s Democratic senators have worked for over a decade to secure funding for the conduit, and Boebert sponsored the House bill to complete it.
In his veto letter, Trump stated his administration’s commitment to preventing taxpayer funding of “expensive and unreliable policies.”
