Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan Party Plans Lahore Protest Against Government

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan party (TTAP) is planning a protest in Lahore on February 8th, marking the second anniversary of the general elections and voicing opposition too the current government. The party asserts its movement is peaceful, focused on ending oppression and seeking a more representative political system in Pakistan.
Call for Peaceful Protest and General Disruption
TTAP chief, Mohsin Dawar, emphasized the peaceful nature of the planned demonstration, stating, “We are not going to Lahore to conquer, curse at anyone or throw rocks at them; our slogan is that we are setting out to end oppression and cruelty.” The party is calling on citizens to demonstrate their opposition by closing shops,rickshaws,and taxis on February 8th.
Achakzai, recently nominated as the next opposition leader in the National Assembly, urged the public to support the opposition against what he described as a “Parliament thrust upon” Pakistan. he further stated the country is facing “endless issues because of ill-intended decisions” and believes the government itself acknowledges its lack of legitimacy.
Political Support and concerns
Moeen Qureshi,the opposition leader of the Punjab Assembly,has welcomed Achakzai and pledged support from numerous MPAs who will accompany him to Lahore. Qureshi cautioned Punjab authorities against repeating the treatment received by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi during his visit to lahore last month.
Aliya Hamza Malik, PTI Punjab chief organiser, announced a “grand welcome” for the TTAP leaders at nine locations along GT Road, stating the struggle is “a struggle for the constitution and the law.” Source: X (formerly Twitter)

TTAP spokesperson Hussain Yousafzai described the Lahore visit as a “practice match for the larger movement,” expressing optimism it would bolster the spirits of PTI workers in Punjab. Demands for Political Reform
The TTAP’s national conference previously announced February 8th as a “black day” to commemorate the election anniversary. The alliance is advocating for a new Charter of Democracy, emphasizing the importance of maintaining open dialog, and demanding an “independent” judiciary and election commission, alongside the release of “political prisoners” to restore stability.
Calls for Prisoner Release from national Dialogue Commitee
Simultaneously, the ‘National Dialogue Committee’ (NDC) has called for the release of all political prisoners to ease tensions and facilitate reconciliation talks with the government, though these proposals remain under consideration.
