Turkey Neutralizes ISIS Suspect in Istanbul Operation

Turkish security forces killed a 21-year-old suspected ISIS member, identified as Berkan Ç., during a police operation in Istanbul’s Sultanbeyli district on Thursday, Sept. 4. According to a statement from the Istanbul Governor’s Office, the suspect was “neutralized” after opening fire on officers who were attempting to arrest him for allegedly planning a terrorist attack within the country.

Police Operation in Sultanbeyli District

The Istanbul Governor’s Office confirmed the operation targeted Berkan Ç. due to his suspected links to the Islamic State (ISIS). Officials reported that the suspect resisted arrest by firing upon police officers, prompting the security forces to return fire. The exchange resulted in the death of the suspect and left one civilian wounded, according to the governor’s office.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül praised the Istanbul General Directorate of Police and intelligence services for their “determination against terrorist cells” that threaten state security and national peace. A formal investigation into the incident has been opened by the competent authorities.

During that period, Turkish authorities reported the death of an ISIS-linked individual in a shootout and the subsequent detention of at least 209 other suspects tied to the jihadist organization.
