Nick Cave’s “Mammoth” Installation at the Smithsonian American Art Museum

In February 2026, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will unveil “Nick Cave: Mammoth,” a monumental new body of work by internationally acclaimed artist Nick Cave. This marks Cave’s first solo exhibition in Washington, D.C. and represents the museum’s largest-ever commission from a single artist.

A World Animated by the Past

“Mammoth” invites visitors to walk among the fantastical remains of ancient creatures, envisioning a world animated by the power of the past and the transformative possibilities of the imagination. The installation features crafted hides and bones of mammoths, a video projection bringing the long-dead animals to life, and hundreds of transformed found objects—ranging from vintage tools to the artist’s grandmother’s thimble collection—displayed like paleontological specimens on a massive light table.

Exploring History, Identity, and Creativity

Nick Cave, born in 1959, is renowned for his work that blends sculpture, performance, and fashion. He is particularly known for his exuberant Soundsuits, originally created in response to racialized police violence. His work consistently explores the intersections of history and identity. “Mammoth” represents a broadening and deepening of these themes, delving into Cave’s family history in rural Chariton County, Missouri, his relationship with the landscape, and the nature of his own creativity.

Finding Meaning in the Everyday

By showcasing ordinary and often forgotten objects, Cave’s installation shines a light on what we value and how we create meaning. The work evokes lost lives and cultures, while also suggesting the magical possibilities of a universe created through imagination and humble materials. Focused on the connections between people and their environment, “Mammoth” prompts reflection on our relationship with a constantly evolving landscape.

Nick Cave: A Multifaceted Artist

Nick Cave is also known as an Australian singer, musician, and writer, and is the frontman of the rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. His music is characterized by emotional intensity and lyrical themes of death, religion, love, and violence.
