Gardaí Seize €30 Million in Bitcoin, Marking First Successful Access to Long-Lost Crypto Wallets
Irish authorities have successfully seized Bitcoin valued at approximately €30 million in a major operation conducted by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), with support from Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre. This marks the first time CAB has gained access to a cache of cryptocurrency seized seven years ago, potentially unlocking a total of €360 million in Bitcoin.
Breakthrough After Years of Impasse
The seized cryptocurrency consists of 500 Bitcoin, currently valued at around €60,000 each. The breakthrough comes after a prolonged period where access to 12 virtual wallets, containing a total of 6,000 Bitcoin, was impossible. The digital keys required to unlock these wallets were lost, reportedly hidden in a fishing rod case, effectively freezing the assets.
Origins of the Seized Bitcoin
The Bitcoin was initially seized in 2019 during an operation targeting Clifton Collins, a 55-year-vintage former beekeeper who cultivated cannabis and sold it to criminal networks. Collins invested in Bitcoin in 2011 and 2012, when the cryptocurrency was significantly less valuable. As the value of Bitcoin soared, he dispersed his holdings across multiple wallets, documenting the access codes in a file.
Lost Keys and Renewed Hope
Following his arrest, Collins claimed the document containing the wallet access codes was lost during a break-in at one of his properties. Despite surrendering €1.2 million in assets in 2020, including Bitcoin he still had access to, the majority of his cryptocurrency holdings remained inaccessible until now.
Europol’s Role in the Operation
Europol played a crucial role in the operation, hosting meetings at its headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands, and providing “highly complex technical expertise and decryption resources” to CAB investigators and analysts. RTE reports that this support was vital to the success of unlocking the wallet.
CAB’s Increasing Focus on Cryptocurrency
The Gardaí have noted a growing trend of criminals in Ireland utilizing cryptocurrency to conceal their wealth due to its anonymous nature. CAB has been actively targeting the seizure of crypto assets, but realizing their value has proven challenging. Garda.ie confirms the seizure and access of the Bitcoin wallet.
Future Implications
With one wallet now accessible, authorities are optimistic about unlocking the remaining 11 wallets, potentially leading to the sale of the entire €360 million Bitcoin holdings. This would represent a significant increase in the value of assets typically seized by CAB. The Irish Times indicates the bureau has been hoping for technological advancements to enable access to the wallets.
