Snapchat Threats Trigger Criminal Charges in Munich
Two students at a middle school in Nymphenburg are facing criminal charges after posting a list of names and violent threats on Snapchat. Police identified the teenagers, aged 16 and 17, through handwriting analysis after teachers alerted the Neuhausen police station on Thursday evening.
Police Recover Handwritten Evidence
The investigation launched after school staff presented authorities with a screenshot of the social media post. The image featured a handwritten note listing several students alongside threats of violence. Officers eventually tracked the two suspects to a residential address, where they recovered the original handwritten list. A search of the premises turned up no weapons or similar items.
The Defense of a Failed “Joke”
The students, neither of whom had previously appeared in police records, admitted to creating the list but insisted the act was a “joke.” Law enforcement initiated formal criminal proceedings for the threat of criminal offenses. The teenagers could face up to three years in prison.
Safety Briefings at the School
Following their identification, the youths were processed by police, including identification procedures, before being released to their parents. On Friday, youth officers from the police headquarters visited the campus to conduct “Gefährdetenansprachen,” or formal safety briefings.
These sessions targeted two objectives: providing a forum for students to ask questions and counter potential insecurity, and educating the student body on risks and dangers of unthoughtful social media posts.
