United Kingdom Approves Daily Pill for Moderate to Severe Plaque Psoriasis

Britain’s medicines regulator approved Johnson & Johnson’s daily oral pill, icotrokinra hydrochloride, on October 23, 2026, for adults and adolescents aged 12 and older who weigh at least 40 kg and are candidates for systemic therapy for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that causes red, scaly, and often itchy or painful patches on areas including the scalp, genitals, hands, feet, and nails. The drug is marketed under the brand name Icotyde by Janssen-Cilag Limited.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) authorized the treatment following the review of data from four Phase 3 clinical trials involving 2,500 participants. This trial cohort included 72 adolescents aged 12 to under 18 years who met the minimum weight requirement of 40 kg. At week 16, all four studies demonstrated that the oral medication’s efficacy in treating moderate to severe plaque psoriasis when compared with a placebo.

Clinical Trials and Trial Data Supporting the MHRA Authorisation

The regulatory review evaluated patients across late-stage clinical trials to measure results over a 16-week period. Patients receiving the daily pill achieved better results after 16 weeks than those administered a placebo. Julian Beach, Executive Director, Operations at the MHRA, stated that the authorisation provides another treatment option for patients living with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

The medication operates by selectively binding to and blocking the IL-23 receptor. IL-23 is involved in immune and inflammatory responses and can contribute to the chronic inflammation associated with immune-mediated diseases such as psoriasis. Patients are prescribed a 200 mg tablet taken once daily, with instructions to consult healthcare professionals and adhere strictly to the Patient Information Leaflet.

Commercial Strategy and Global Regulatory Timeline

The United Kingdom authorization follows the drug’s approval in the United States earlier in the year, which marked its first approved indication. Manufactured in collaboration with Protagonist Therapeutics, icotrokinra is currently being studied by Johnson & Johnson for other conditions, including ulcerative colitis, psoriatic arthritis, and Crohn’s disease. Corporate projections estimate that the treatment could generate $5 billion in peak sales across multiple indications.

In the pharmaceutical market, icotrokinra enters a competitive field alongside established treatments. Rivals include Bristol Myers Squibb’s Sotyktu and AbbVie’s blockbuster Skyrizi. Regulatory oversight in the UK remains active through the Yellow Card scheme, allowing healthcare providers and patients to report any suspected side effects as post-market monitoring continues.
