UK Prime Minister Pledges Accelerated Defense Spending Increase

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday a commitment to accelerate defense spending, potentially raising the target to 3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2029. The announcement came in response to a question regarding reports of a planned increase in defense investment.

The United Kingdom previously announced plans to increase annual defense spending to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027, with a goal of reaching 3 percent in the subsequent legislature, scheduled for 2029.

At the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Starmer revealed that the UK will deploy an aircraft carrier strike group to the North Atlantic and High North this year . He too stated that the United Kingdom has evolved since the period following Brexit.
