UK Government to Ban Unlicensed Gambling Firms From Sports Sponsorships
The British government is poised to ban gambling companies without a UK license from sponsoring sports teams, including those in the Premier League, as part of a broader effort to combat illegal gambling operations. The move, announced on February 23, 2026, aims to protect consumers and address concerns about links between unlicensed betting and organized crime.
Crackdown on the Unlicensed Market
Ministers have expressed growing concern over the risks associated with the unlicensed gambling market. These risks include a failure to adhere to regulations designed to protect customers, such as mandatory financial vulnerability checks and responsible advertising practices . Unlicensed operators often lack adequate data protection measures, leaving individuals vulnerable to fraud and identity theft. The government also points to connections between unlicensed betting and organized crime .
Consultation and Proposed Ban
A formal consultation on the proposed ban will be launched this spring. The government intends to explore legal mechanisms to prevent unlicensed gambling companies from gaining visibility through sponsorships, particularly within the Premier League . Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy emphasized that individuals placing bets “deserve to understand the sites they’re using are properly regulated, with the right protections in place” and that it is unacceptable for unlicensed operators to be prominently displayed on major football clubs .
Previous Warnings and TGP Europe
Last year, several Premier League clubs – Bournemouth, Fulham, Newcastle, Wolves, and Burnley – were warned by the Gambling Commission regarding their relationships with TGP Europe, a firm that surrendered its British license after failing to conduct sufficient checks on business partners and breaching anti-money laundering rules . Clubs were cautioned that promoting unlicensed gambling businesses could lead to prosecution .
Industry Response
The Betting and Gaming Council has voiced its support for the government’s plan, stating that gambling companies seeking the “visibility and credibility of English football” should adhere to the UK’s high regulatory standards .
Existing Restrictions and Loopholes
Premier League clubs have already agreed to remove gambling sponsorship from the front of their matchday shirts by the finish of the current season. Although, sleeve sponsorship remains permissible, and the government recognizes that this loophole allows unlicensed firms to maintain a significant presence in the country’s most-watched sports league . The upcoming consultation aims to address this issue and eliminate sponsorship deals with unlicensed companies altogether .
Taskforce to Combat Illegal Gambling
Alongside the sponsorship ban, the government is establishing a cross-industry taskforce involving social media platforms, banks, and law enforcement to protect fans from harm and further tackle the illegal gambling market .
