UK Pig Farms on High Alert: Biosecurity Survey Launched Amid African Swine Fever Threat

UK pig producers are being urged to participate in a new industry survey designed to assess current biosecurity practices as concerns mount over the potential incursion of African Swine Fever (ASF) and other transboundary diseases. The initiative, launched by Roam Technology, aims to identify vulnerabilities and bolster defenses against devastating outbreaks that could cripple the sector.

Rising Threat of African Swine Fever

Even as the UK remains free from ASF, the disease continues to circulate across Europe. Recent cases in Spain highlight the importance of maintaining high biosecurity standards. ASF poses a significant risk to the UK pig sector, and proactive measures are crucial to prevent its introduction.

Survey Aims to Map Biosecurity Practices

The five-minute survey, developed by hygiene and disinfection company Roam Technology, seeks to build a clearer picture of biosecurity practices on UK pig farms and pinpoint areas where additional support may be needed. Farmers completing the survey have a chance of winning a £100 voucher of their choice.

Recent Disease Spread Highlights Vulnerabilities

The unpredictable nature of ASF spread was demonstrated in September 2023 when the virus jumped more than 400km across the Baltic Sea to Sweden from infected areas in Latvia and Poland. This event underscored the role that human activity can play in disease transmission, suggesting that the most likely route of transmission is human-mediated.

Biosecurity Lapses at UK Ports

The National Pig Association (NPA) has raised concerns about biosecurity lapses at UK ports, reporting evidence of illegally imported meat entering the country through both personal and commercial routes. The NPA has also expressed concern that enforcement resources for existing control measures may not be sufficient.

Strengthening Farm Biosecurity

Nigel Bennet, biosecurity specialist at Roam Technology, emphasized that strong on-farm biosecurity remains the UK pig sector’s first line of defense. By understanding current practices and identifying gaps, the industry can strengthen its protection against disease outbreaks.
