Vurt Launches as a Vertical Video Platform for Independent Filmmakers
A new mobile-first vertical streaming platform, Vurt, has launched, offering independent filmmakers a dedicated space to showcase micro-series and feature films in a vertical format. The platform currently hosts over 100 episodes of original content, including films featuring Kevin Hart and Vivica A. Fox, with a new original title released weekly.
The Rise of Vertical Video and Micro-Drama
The emergence of Vurt aligns with the growing popularity of short-form video content, fueled by the success of platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. This trend has spurred established streaming services like Netflix to explore vertical video feeds, and has led to the growth of “micro-drama” platforms like ReelShort, and DramaBox. According to Appfigures, ReelShort was projected to achieve approximately $1.2 billion in gross consumer spending in 2025, while DramaBox generated $276 million in consumer spending last year. TikTok even launched its own micro-drama app in January.
Vurt’s Unique Approach to Content Distribution
Vurt differentiates itself through its streamlined content submission process. Unlike traditional streaming services, Vurt allows creators to submit content directly, with projects becoming available to audiences within 48 to 72 hours of approval. This rapid turnaround time addresses a key challenge faced by independent filmmakers navigating lengthy distribution processes.
Monetization and Revenue Sharing
Vurt operates on an advertising-based video on demand (AVOD) model, enabling filmmakers to monetize their operate through ad placements. The platform offers a non-exclusive licensing agreement with a 50/50 revenue split, providing a potentially lucrative opportunity for creators.
The Team Behind Vurt
Vurt was founded by Ted Lucas, too the founder of Slip-N-Slide Records, known for representing artists like Trick Daddy, Trina, Rick Ross, and Plies. Lucas developed the concept for Vurt after experiencing distribution challenges with his documentary, “Miami Kingpins.” The founding team also includes Eric Tomosunas, founder of Swirl Films; director and producer Mark A. Samuels; and angel investor Hilmon Sorey. Tarik Brooks, a former executive at BET and REVOLT, serves as an advisory figure.
The Future of Vertical Storytelling
As younger audiences increasingly consume content on mobile devices, the vertical format is gaining traction. Lucas believes, “The way people consume content has already changed, and we’re building something that fits that future.” Vurt is currently available for free on the App Store and Google Play, as well as a web version dedicated to vertical content.
